Practicing gratitude helps to put you in a state of coherence where you’re able to focus better, think more clearly, and become more innovative.
Being in a state of coherence helps you perform better at work, and it even improves your health by reducing stress levels and supporting immune function.
Coherence is something that happens to us when we experience renewing emotions like love, gratitude, and compassion. It rejuvenates our life force.
Coherence is the state of being fully calm and fully alert so you can show up with your full potential.
We live in a world where we are constantly bombarded with fear, stress, and tragic events – so it can become more and more challenging to focus on renewing emotions. It can feel easier to be pulled into the darkness of fear, stress, and overwhelm.
So you’ve got to build an intentional practice of gratitude and coherence to live your best life professionally and personally.
Coherence VS Incoherence
Improving your coherence directly affects your ability to make decisions, listen to others and be objective, react to situations appropriately, be creative, stay focused, and be productive.
Your level of coherence enables you to excel at work and in life despite daily challenges, and it is more important than your IQ for leading to sustainable high-performance results.
When we are not in a state of coherence, we are incoherent. We may feel the following symptoms:
- Overwhelmed
- No energy
- Frustrated
- Impatient
- Unhealthy
- Out of control
- Can’t sleep
When we are in a state of coherence, we are able to have:
- A positive outlook
- Optimal performance
- Self-regulation
- Emotional flexibility
- Increased energy
- Mental clarity
- Clear intuition
- More innovation
- Better health
What’s truly incredible is that we can actually measure coherence.
Do you know that feeling when you walk into a room and you feel like you could cut the tension with a knife? You can literally feel the emotions of the people around you without them saying a word. You can feel the incoherence around you.
Now, imagine walking into a room and meeting someone who makes you feel completely at ease immediately. Without the need for words or actions, you are feeling their emotional state . That’s how it feels around someone who is coherent.
Your internal emotional state is coded in your heart’s energy field, and “the heart’s magnetic field can be measured several feet away from the body by sensitive magnetometers.” Your internal emotional state–not just what you say and do–is impacting everyone around you.
It’s time to create coherence at work and at home because chaos is contagious, but so is coherence.
Practicing Gratitude
Practicing gratitude helps you create a state of coherence, but you’ve got to get out of your head and into your heart. For people who are used to thinking logically about everything, this can be difficult.
You can start by getting intentional about your breath. Start by focusing on the area of your heart and imagine that your breath is flowing in and out of your heart. Take a few deep breaths… a little slower and deeper than normal.
Start by breathing in for 4 counts, then breathing out for 4 counts. Focus on your breath for a few minutes and then turn your attention towards your heart. Think about something you are grateful for right now and focus on feeling gratitude within your heart.
Gratitude is a renewing emotion. “Gratitude can boost neurotransmitter serotonin and activate the brain stem to produce dopamine.” By practicing gratitude, you can shift your mind, body, and soul into a more positive, happier state simply by breathing and feeling grateful for a few minutes.
If you want more guidance to begin your gratitude practice, you can watch the replay from our POP Session (“Peace On Purpose Session”) about Thanks-giving and Gratitude.
Our POP Sessions are 30-minute guided experiences to help you focus on renewing emotions, positivity, and breathing.

Creating Coherence
There are also a few different ways that Impact Business Coaches can help you create more coherence in your life.
1. Inner Balance™ Tool
This is a biofeedback tool that measures your level of coherence and helps you track your progress over time. With practice, it can become easier to enter the state of coherence and maintain that state for longer periods of time.
Cindy Lamir loves all the data that the Inner Balance™ provides. She can measure her coherence and get immediate feedback to see if what she is doing is working to improve her coherence. Cindy has been practicing coherence for several years and this tool provides her with real data on her coherence and how it has improved (or declined) over time.
The Inner Balance™ tool helps you get out of your head and into your heart for meaningful transformation.

Using Gratitude to Get Ahead
Stress is inevitable. So many of us are rushing around in the morning trying to get to work, and then we’re rushing around all day trying to get everything done, and then rushing home to spend quality time with the people we love.
Imagine feeling fully alert and calm throughout the day so that you could focus on your priorities, achieve more meaningful results, and experience better energy.
All of that is possible when you feel gratitude to create coherence.
Practicing gratitude makes you a better leader and improves cognitive function to help you get ahead at work.
Even a 5 minute gratitude practice can shift your internal state from chaotic to coherent. You can incorporate this practice on your way to work, when you first sit down at your desk, and even at the end of your work day to create a new internal emotional state for home.
