The Power of the Right Question
“If I had an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on the solution, I would spend the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask.”
— Albert Einstein
Einstein wasn’t just talking about science.
He was pointing to something profoundly human.
In moments that matter most — in leadership, in relationships, in life — the quality of the questions we ask shapes the direction we take. Before strategy. Before action. Before answers.
And yet, in a world that rewards speed and certainty, we rarely slow down long enough to ask the questions that truly matter.
Leaders Don’t Always Need the Answers — They Need Space to Ask
Most leaders I know are thoughtful, capable, and deeply committed. They care about their people. They want to do the right thing. And they’re carrying more responsibility than ever.
The pace is relentless. Expectations are high. Decisions feel weighty.
So it’s understandable that we’re trained — and often rewarded — for moving quickly to solutions. Fix it. Decide. Keep going.
But the most impactful leaders I’ve worked with have learned something counterintuitive:
They pause.
They recognize that clarity doesn’t come from faster answers but from better questions.
Powerful questions do more than solve problems.
They slow us down enough to notice what’s really happening — beneath the surface.
They help us:
- See assumptions we didn’t realize we were making
- Name blind spots we’ve been working around
- Understand what’s truly getting in the way of progress
Not just in our teams or strategies — but in ourselves.
Coaching Provides Space To Ask The Right Question
Executive coaching isn’t about advice or quick fixes.
It’s about creating space to think more clearly, feel more grounded, and lead more intentionally.
Coaching invites questions like:
- What’s the real challenge here — not just the urgent one?
- What might I be avoiding, protecting, or assuming?
- What would extraordinary look like if I stopped playing small?
When you work with a skilled coach, something subtle but powerful happens.
You begin to hear yourself differently.
Patterns emerge. Truths surface. Decisions feel less reactive and more aligned with who you are.
Growth doesn’t come from having all the answers.
It comes from being willing to sit with the right question — long enough for clarity to arrive.
Your One Precious and Wonderful Life
You have one life.
One opportunity to lead, to love, and to leave a legacy that matters.
Asking the right questions — in business and in life — is one of the ways we honor that gift.
Years ago, I was standing at a crossroads in my own career. From the outside, everything looked successful. Inside, something felt misaligned.
My coach asked me one simple question:
“What if the next season of your life wasn’t about achievement — but about alignment with what matters most to you?”
That question stayed with me.
It slowed me down. It unsettled me. And it ultimately changed everything.
It planted the seed for the work I do today.
The right question can change the course of a conversation.
The right question can change the direction of a career.
And sometimes, the right question can change a life.
