re·sil·ience /rəˈzilyəns/ noun
- The ability to bounce back, grow and thrive during challenge, change and adversity.
In our journey to reach our full potential, the changes we desire require work, grit, and determination. Old habits don’t give up easily; they put up a fight to stay in place. On top of that, our day-to-day lives present more than enough external challenges to throw us off track. Can you relate?
This has been our personal experience and the experience of those we coach.
So, what can we do to overcome the internal and external pressures that stand in the way of our goals and aspirations?
We can start to build…
Without personal resilience, we succumb to stress and return to old, destructive habits (our auto-pilot responses)— we snap at others, we lose perspective, are forgetful, isolate ourselves, and the list goes on.
We react this way during times of challenge, change, and adversity because our body is producing cortisol. This is the “fight or flight” hormone, and it impairs our ability to be our best selves – emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and physically.
When we possess personal resilience,
we have mental clarity and increased energy.
Resilience increases our ability to be innovative
and perform optimally.
We are healthier – emotionally and physically.
When we are resilient- our autonomic nervous system is in sync
the perfect balance.
…and the perfect balance is when you are
perfectly calm and perfectly alert.
We have learned that small changes can make a big impact on personal resilience.
So – try this science-based technique that feels like magic if you didn’t know the science.
The first small step is to breathe.
Not hard to do.
We all do it without thinking.
You’re already doing it unless you are stressed and unconsciously holding your breath with a clenched jaw. (Busted!)
Take some focused breaths – a little slower and a little deeper than usual.
Try it for a minute right now. Go ahead, no one will even notice.
Most likely you will be able to immediately feel the difference in your emotions and level of clarity.
If not, don’t give up because it does work. We have the science to prove it.
This is just the first step of our resilience building technique, but it’s important.
A few responses from our clients who have tried this technique include:
“My boss noticed my calm demeanor in staff meetings and
the positive impact it has on everyone in the room.”
“I was able to see my co-worker’s point of view,
which was very different for me in the past.
I did not get defensive.
“I remembered not to respond in a judgmental way!”
“I sleep better!”
“My headaches went away.”
Ways to Apply
The next time you:
- feel overwhelmed and are not sure what to do next
- encounter a challenging client, coworker, or family member
- need to look at a situation from a different perspective
Remind yourself to breathe…
a little slower and a little deeper than normal
for just a few minutes.
